A world where lives are predicted by genome and brains are 'corrected' for those who stray. Orbital counselor Kang Seoyul discovers a sequence absent from the human genome in a deviant who deceived the system for fifteen years. And Seoyul's own deviation begins to rise. [Characters] Kang Seoyul (31, orbital counselor, a contradictory figure who lives by the rules yet indulges in small transgressions every night, lost her mother to orbital correction), Lee Dowan (42, undetected deviant for 15 years, owner of a secondhand bookshop in Haebangchon, unreadable expression), Cha Minhyuk (28, junior counselor who places blind faith in the system) Deviation Coefficient, Full 30-Episode Outline Episode 1: Permissible Range, The daily life of orbital counselor Kang Seoyul unfolds. By day she identifies deviants and sends them to correction centers; by night she deliberately walks alleys that don't exist on her predicted path. A new case is assigned to her: the file of Lee Dowan, who has evaded system surveillance for fifteen years, appears on her terminal. The deviation history field is blank. A person who has never once been measured in fifteen years. Episode 2: Haebangchon 404, Seoyul visits the secondhand bookshop in Haebangchon listed as Dowan's last known address. Dowan is recommending books to a customer amid the smell of old paper, and his expression doesn't change even after confirming Seoyul's credentials. Seoyul attempts a standard interview, but Dowan's responses fit nowhere in the predictive model. Junior counselor Cha Minhyuk urges Seoyul to report the case to superiors immediately. Episode 3: Unregistered Sequence, Seoyul opens Dowan's raw genomic data herself. 1,247 base pairs that correspond to nothing in the human reference genome are inserted at the terminus of chromosome 14. She suspects a data error, but reanalysis yields the same result. Seoyul leaves this out of her report. That night, a notification appears on her terminal: her deviation coefficient has risen by 0.3. Episode 4: The Shape of Noise, Seoyul begins investigating the unregistered sequence on her own. No similar sequence exists in any database, and no such pattern appears in synthetic biology records. Minhyuk asks about the progress on the Dowan case. Seoyul answers only that it's "a complicated case." During their second interview, Dowan looks at the orbital measurement band on Seoyul's wrist and asks, "Do you wear that to bed too?" Episode 5: Orbital Correction 2011-07-KSM, Seoyul accesses the orbital correction record of her mother, Kang Sumin. Reason for correction: 'Repeated high-deviation transgressions, deemed unfit for child-rearing.' After the correction, her mother recognized Seoyul, but the way she smiled had changed. Seoyul attempts to access her mother's genomic data but lacks the clearance. Minhyuk checks Seoyul's recent deviation coefficient trend and furrows his brow. Episode 6: The Alley Without Cats, Seoyul visits Dowan's bookshop again, unofficially. Dowan tells her about how Haebangchon has changed, before and after the orbital system was introduced. "There used to be a lot of stray cats. After the system eliminated the rats, the cats disappeared too." Seoyul tries to read micro-expressions of anxiety or concealment in Dowan's face but finds nothing. Her deviation coefficient rises another 0.2. On the way back, Seoyul takes the stairs instead of her usual route. Episode 7: The 0.5 Threshold, The system sends Seoyul a self-inspection protocol. If the cumulative deviation coefficient exceeds 0.5, a counselor qualification review is initiated. Seoyul shares parts of Dowan's interviews with Minhyuk and drafts a report within normal parameters. But Minhyuk independently analyzes CCTV trajectories around Dowan's bookshop and discovers that every Tuesday, Dowan disappears to a location the system cannot track. Episode 8: Tuesday's Void, Seoyul traces Dowan's Tuesday route before Minhyuk can. Dowan enters a decommissioned communications facility beneath Namsan. Seoyul follows but doesn't find Dowan inside. Instead, she discovers a hand-drawn gene map on the wall. A circle is drawn at the chromosome 14 position, with numbers beneath it. Seoyul realizes the numbers are identification codes. Dowan is not alone. Episode 9: Seventeen Circles, There are seventeen identification codes on the wall. When Seoyul queries them in the system, all are listed as 'maintaining normal orbit.' But when she accesses the raw genomic data, three of them show partial unregistered sequences similar to Dowan's. Seoyul asks Dowan directly. "Who are these people?" For the first time, Dowan's expression changes. Not his eyes, the muscles in his jaw tighten almost imperceptibly. "If you've come this far, your coefficient must be pretty high by now." Episode 10: A Counselor's Counselor, Seoyul's deviation coefficient reaches 0.8. Senior administrator Yoon Jaeha interviews Seoyul. Yoon asks gentle but precise questions, and Seoyul gives textbook responses as trained. After the interview, Yoon restricts some of Seoyul's access. Minhyuk tells Seoyul, "Hand the Dowan case over to me," but Seoyul refuses. That night, an anonymous message appears on Seoyul's terminal: "Your mother's data. Look at chromosome fourteen." Episode 11: What Is Not Inherited, Seoyul obtains her mother Kang Sumin's pre-correction genomic data through a backdoor route. The same unregistered sequence as Dowan's exists at the terminus of chromosome 14. In the post-correction data, that sequence has been erased. Orbital correction includes not just behavioral modification but genomic editing. Seoyul's hands tremble. She opens her own genomic data. Chromosome 14 is clean. But on chromosome 9, there is a short unregistered fragment. Episode 12: Conditions for Mutation, Seoyul tells Dowan what she has found. Dowan is silent for a long time before speaking. "I don't know what that sequence is. But people who have it make choices the system cannot predict." Dowan explains how the seventeen found each other. In the system's blind spots, unpredictable behavior drew them together. Minhyuk spots Seoyul outside Dowan's bookshop. An unofficial visit. Something changes in Minhyuk's eyes. Episode 13: Minhyuk's Report, Minhyuk compiles a record of Seoyul's unofficial contacts and submits it to the higher-ups. He doesn't tell Seoyul beforehand. Instead, he sets a coffee on Seoyul's desk and says, "I'm doing this because I care about you. Correction is treatment." Seoyul smells the coffee and intuits what Minhyuk has done. Yoon Jaeha summons Seoyul. She is notified of her complete removal from the Dowan case and mandatory enrollment in a self-deviation management program. Episode 14: Blind Spot, Seoyul is officially removed from the Dowan case, but she has already transferred the data she secured to a personal storage device. She tracks down one of the seventeen identification codes: Park Eunha. Eunha is a civil servant in Sejong City maintaining a flawless orbit. When Seoyul meets her, Eunha speaks with terror in her eyes. "Don't come looking for me. We'll both be corrected." Seoyul notices a small scar on the back of Eunha's neck. Episode 15: A Thirty-One-Year-Old's Night, Seoyul's birthday. No one celebrates. Seoyul makes the seaweed soup her mother used to prepare every year before the correction. It tastes different. It always tastes different. Dowan leaves a book at the bookshop door. A worn first edition of Richard Dawkins. On the inside cover, written in pencil: "Freedom is not inherited, it is chosen." Seoyul's deviation coefficient hits 1.0. Warning level. Episode 16: Project Compass, Seoyul digs into the orbital system's internal archive and discovers an early research document called 'Project Compass.' When the system was first designed, the existence of unregistered sequence carriers was already known. Classifying them as 'Compass variants' and systematically surveilling, and correcting them when necessary, was one of the system's hidden core objectives. Orbital prediction was nearly a byproduct. Seoyul cannot move from her screen. Episode 17: Dowan's Fifteen Years, For the first time, Dowan tells Seoyul about his past. Fifteen years ago, he was a life sciences researcher who participated in Compass variant research and discovered the project's true nature. He fled. The bookshop is both a cover and a sanctuary. Dowan has spent years finding variants and hiding them in the system's blind spots. His unreadable expression is the product of training. "It's not that I have no emotions, it's that getting caught means the end." Seoyul notices old chemical burn scars on the back of his hand. Episode 18: Eunha's Scar, Seoyul goes to see Eunha again. Eunha has already undergone partial correction. Half of her chromosome 14 sequence has been removed. Eunha describes, in a flat tone, how she changed after the correction. "The urge to choose disappeared. It's comfortable." But Eunha's left eyelid twitches irregularly. Seoyul sees her mother. She cannot bring herself to ask Eunha whether she is truly comfortable. Episode 19: The Second Report, Minhyuk traces Seoyul's access logs to the personal storage device and drafts a second report. This time, he tells Seoyul. "This is your last chance. If you self-report, it might end with reassignment, no correction." Seoyul looks Minhyuk in the eye and replies, "Your mother is alive, isn't she?" Minhyuk shuts his mouth. Seoyul leaves the office. That day, Yoon Jaeha deploys surveillance drones around Dowan's bookshop. Episode 20: The Ninth Chromosome, Seoyul analyzes the chromosome 9 fragment found in her own genome. Shorter than the one on chromosome 14 but structurally identical in pattern. Whether it was inherited from her mother or occurred naturally is unknown. Dowan says, "Your coefficient isn't rising because of the sequence alone. The sequence is possibility. The choices were yours." For the first time, Seoyul confronts the possibility that her nightly transgressions may have been more than just a habit. Episode 21: Quarantine, Yoon Jaeha orders Seoyul into home confinement and confiscates her terminal. Her deviation coefficient stands at 1.4, one step below the correction recommendation threshold of 1.5. In her confined room, Seoyul replays from memory the last voice message her mother sent just before correction. "Seoyul-ah, even if Mommy changes, I'm still Mommy. Right?" Upon hearing of Seoyul's confinement, Dowan instructs the remaining members of the seventeen to disperse and go into hiding. Episode 22: Minhyuk's Night, The point of view shifts to Minhyuk. He lives a life on a flawless orbit. Deviation coefficient: 0.1. And yet, night after night, he stares at Seoyul's empty desk and cannot sleep. Minhyuk follows the clues Seoyul left behind and accesses the Project Compass documents. After reading them, his deviation coefficient doesn't budge from 0.1. But his hand, for the first time, hesitates over the report submission button. Episode 23: 1.5, Seoyul's deviation coefficient reaches 1.5 even in confinement. A correction order is issued. She must report to the correction center within seventy-two hours. Dowan learns Seoyul's confinement address and searches for a way to deliver an emergency escape route to her. Minhyuk takes the correction order and goes to Seoyul's confinement location. Whether he has come to deliver the order or to warn her, even Minhyuk doesn't know. Episode 24: Seventy-Two Hours, Minhyuk hands Seoyul the correction order. Seoyul reads the turmoil on his face. She asks, "You read the documents, didn't you?" Minhyuk doesn't answer. Instead, he tells her the inspection cycle of her confinement surveillance system, and leaves. Seoyul escapes during the gap between inspections. Dowan is waiting for her at the decommissioned facility beneath Namsan. On Dowan's face, for the first time in fifteen years, a flicker of fear. Episode 25: Chain Detection, Seoyul's deviation is detected by the system, and the network of seventeen begins to unravel in a chain reaction. Yoon Jaeha personally commands the search. Dowan presents Seoyul with her options: flee, go back and accept correction, or release the existence of the unregistered sequence to the public. Seoyul chooses the third, but there is no channel for disclosure. The system controls all information. Dowan says, "There is one way. But you won't like it." Episode 26: Orbital Broadcast, Dowan's plan: hack the orbital system's nationwide alert channel and transmit the Compass variant data and Project Compass documents. To do this, he needs the old research facility access credentials he has kept hidden for fifteen years. Seoyul knows that if Dowan executes this plan, his location will be exposed and he will be arrested immediately. Dowan knows too. Seoyul asks, "What about you?" Dowan tidies the bookshelves and answers, "I need to close up the shop. Lots of things I've put off." Episode 27: The Night Before Correction, Yoon Jaeha pinpoints the location of Dowan's decommissioned facility. The entrances are sealed, and Seoyul and Dowan are trapped inside. Dowan gives Seoyul the complete Compass variant dataset he backed up during his research days. Within it lies the real reason Seoyul's mother was selected for correction. Kang Sumin's unregistered sequence was a dominant pattern with a high probability of transmission to offspring. The system hadn't been protecting Seoyul, it had corrected her mother to halt the sequence's spread. Episode 28: The 0.1 Choice, Minhyuk receives orders from Yoon Jaeha to support the facility breach. He enters with a fully armed correction team. Inside, Dowan is attempting to access the alert channel while Seoyul organizes the data. Minhyuk comes face to face with Seoyul. Seoyul does not resist. Instead, she shows Minhyuk the Compass data. Minhyuk checks his own genome. Chromosome 14, clean. No unregistered sequence. Minhyuk's choice is not driven by any sequence. It is purely his own. Minhyuk tells the breach team, "Give me five minutes." Episode 29: Deviation, Dowan begins transmitting the data over the alert channel. Project Compass documents flood terminals across the nation. The existence of the unregistered sequence on chromosome 14, the true nature of orbital correction, the list of Compass variants. Yoon Jaeha cuts the transmission remotely, but the data has already been saved on tens of thousands of terminals. The breach team enters. Dowan is arrested. Seoyul is arrested. Minhyuk writes his report. In this report, for the first time, his own opinion is included. Episode 30: Residual Deviation, The correction center. Seoyul sits in the waiting room. The walls are white and the air smells of disinfectant. Her mother must have smelled this same smell sitting in this same chair. But outside the center, things are not quiet. People who saw the leaked data have begun asking questions. The system must answer. Seoyul's correction is suspended. She is told it is "a temporary measure." Seoyul is released, but her counselor credentials are revoked. Dowan's correction is carried out. Seoyul visits him afterward. Dowan recognizes her, but the way he recommends books has changed. Seoyul receives the key to the Haebangchon bookshop. Her deviation coefficient remains above 1.5. The system cannot predict Seoyul. She opens the bookshop door and turns on the light. Outside, a stray cat cries.
